With Craft Beer Week fast approaching we like to entice all the craft beer lovers out there to check out the 11 day event celebrating "Chicago: A City of Neighborhoods". We have some great craft breweries listed that are within a mile of the Northwest Pacific line.

Chicago’s 3rd annual Craft Beer Week, and because we all like a good thing it will last for 11 days, and will be held on May 17th -27th. This years theme is “Chicago: A City of Neighborhoods”. There are over 200 venues participating. You will be able to pick up a lanyard and a map at a number of these venues. After selecting from one of 10 maps covering 9 neighborhoods in the city and 1 in the suburbs, participants can purchase beer for $4 and will get a sticker with the breweries logo to attach to their map. Sounds like a great way to remember the event or maybe depending on how much beer you drink, the only way to remember the event. Seriously we encourage everyone to drink responsibly and support the craft breweries in Chicago-land.

In addition of you visit 6 or more neighborhoods and get at least 2 or more stamps in each neighborhood, you can attend the closing ceremony as a VIP, however you will still need to purchase a ticket for the event. For more information on where to pick up a lanyard and a map as well as other special events during the week go to http://chibeerweek.com/

Every Metra Rider near the Northwest Pacific Train Line, has access to some of the greatest Bike Trails in the Chicago-land area. Whether you bike for fun or as a means of getting around this post is for you. We'd love to hear about your ride and any tips for the other riders.

Enjoy Spring On One Of These Scenic Bike Trails

Spring is one of the best times to get your bike out of storage and discover new trails or revisit old favorites. We have listed a number of trails along the Northwest Pacific Metra line as well as some great biking resources and organizations. It is also a great time to get your bike tuned up and road ready, so we have also included bike shops near the train line. A number of the trails do require biking on the street to access the trails, so please check these out carefully before you take small children. Get out and enjoy the weather and let us know of any trails we might have missed. Look for future post on biking in Chicago.

Harvard

The Long Prairie Bike Trail is a paved 14.5 mile trail. It’s fitting that we start with this trail as a portion of the trail was once the Kenosha Division Rail Line. The path is mostly prairie, but there are shaded portions along the way. A number of small villages such as Capron, Poplar Grove and Caledonia are adjacent to the trail. The trail is fairly flat and there is signage providing information on native plants as well as the history of the region. There are a few places to stop and rest and get some refreshments.

To get to the bike trail from the Harvard Metra station head southwest and turn right on N. Ayers St., then right on W. Park St., left on Jackman St., right on W. Washington St., left to stay on W. Washington St., left on Ratzcliff St., the road zig zags here a bit so go right and then left and continue on to Lawrence Road where you can pick up the trail. The bike ride to the trail is approximately 1.4 miles.

McHenry

Moraine Hills State Park is a ways out of town, but worth the effort. This beautiful 2,200 acre park has 10 miles of trails surfaced with crushed lime stone. The park features the following 4 trails: the 2 mile Fox River Trail, 3.2 mile Leather Leaf Trail, 3.7 mile Lake Defiant Trail and the 1.7 mile River Road Trail. Approximately half the park consist of lakes and wetlands perfect for viewing waterfowl as well as other wildlife. We recommend bringing a picnic or packing your own snacks as the parks concession stand has limited hours. A number of water fountains available throughout the park as well as picnic tables. For more information and a map go to http://dnr.state.il.us/lands/landmgt/parks/r2/morhills.htm#Biking

To get to Moraines Hills State Park from the McHenry Metra Station head east on Main St., left on Green Street, right on W. Elm St., right on N. River Rd. The park is approximately 4.7 miles from the McHenry Metra Station. Please note that McHenry has a limited train schedule , so please plan accordingly. There are two bike shops in McHenry so check them out before or after your ride. See bike shop listings below for more information.

Crystal Lake

The Prarie Bike Trail

The Prairie Bike Path in a 26 mile trail stretching from Genoa City in Wisconsin south to Algonquin, linking 8 McHenry County Communities. The trail is mostly flat except a portion in Sterne’s Woods in Crystal Lake that proves to be more challenging with both hills and curves. The trail is surfaced in crushed stone, asphalt, gravel or dirt depending on the stretch of the trail you are on. There are places to stop along the way to rest or for refreshments.

From the downtown Crystal Lake Metra Station head southeast to Railroad St., turn right on Main St., and you can pick up the trail at East Crystal Lake Ave. and S. Main St. From this point you can head north towards Genoa or south towards Algonquin. For a portion of the trail in Crystal Lake you will being riding on the road. From the station to the trail is only .3 miles. Crystal Lake has a great bike shop right by the station, for more information check bike shop listing below.

Palatine

On this ride we suggest you take the Palatine Trail to the Deer Grove Preserve. The trail will take you through Palatine neighborhoods and around the Palatine Hills Golf Course where riders wills find wooded sections before connecting to Deer Grove Preserve. The ride to the preserve is approximately 3.1 miles on paved trails and involves crossing busy road. For information on the Deer Grove Preserve see previous post http://justoffthetracks.com/2012/01/12/bike-deer-grove-forest-preserve/

From the Palatine Metra Station head east on West Wood St., turn left on N. Brockway, turn right to enter the path. Follow the bike path to the left which runs parallel with N. Benton St. When you cross E. Heron Dr. take the trail to the left, follow the trail north at North Hawk St., turn left after crossing N. Smith St. and continue left at West Dundee Rd. At the intersection of N. Quentin Road and W. Dundee Rd.there is an entrance to the Deer Grove Preserve.

Arlington Heights

The Busse Woods Trail is a great biking destination, however getting to the trail from the station is a little challenging, and only biker experienced in sharing the road with motorists should attempt this ride. Busse Woods consists of three major paved trails totaling 11.2 miles. Located in the Ned Brown Forest Preserve the trail loops through the park and will take riders past Busse Lake, an Elk pasture, and through meadows and forests. The trail intersections are marked and riders will find sheltered areas as well as rest rooms and water through out the preserve.

To get to Busse Woods from the downtown Arlington Heights Metra Station head south on N. Vail, right on W. Campbell St., left on South Dwyer Ave., right on W. Orchard Place, left on New Wilke Rd., cross Golf and turn left. An entrance to the preserve is on the left, and will bring you to the north end of the park. The ride to the trail is approximately 3.6 miles.

Des Plaines

DesPlaines River Trail

The Des Plaines River Bike Trail is a 30 + mile trail stretching from River Grove north to just below the Wisconsin border. The trail as you might expect from the it’s name follows the Des Plaines River through prairies, wetlands, and wooded areas. The surface varies and is primarily crushed stone and packed dirt. Many improvements to the trail have provided bridges and underpasses for safe and continuous biking. There are still portions of the trail where bikers will need to cross street to pick up the trail. For information on the cook county portion of the trail please check http://home.comcast.net/~cmorhiker/DPRBikeCook.html While researching I found many riders advise against the use of road bikes on the trail.

Des Plaines is hosting the 2nd Annual Des Plaines River Trail Bike Ride on June 2, 2012 which is a free family event. http://www.desplaines.org/CivicAlerts.aspx?AID=119

From the Des Plaines Metra Station head southeast and turn left onto Pearson St, right on Miner St. and the trail can be picked up on the corner of Miner St. and River Road. The ride to the trail is about .2 miles.

For all the bike riders who enjoy using the train you have The Active Transportation Alliance to thank. This incredible organization works tirelessly on your behalf to make Chicagoland a better, safer and more convient place to bike, walk and use mass transit. Please consider supporting their organization with a membership. For only $30.00 you can enjoy discounts at many bike shops and receive a seven county bike map.
If you are looking for a fun way to spend the day/evening check out our list of the finest Irish Pubs on Metra's Northwest Pacific Line. Hop on the train and enjoy some traditional Irish food and let the proffesionals do the driving so you can enjoy a pint or two of the your favorite Irish Brew.

This pub crawl features six Irish pubs. That is a lot of pubs even for the hardiest of pub crawlers. To fully enjoy each locale you can pick a few pubs and spread it out over 2 or 3 days. Should you make all six, we want to hear from you – once you recover. We started with the pubs closest to the city and work our way out through the northwest suburbs.

Edison Park

Curragh Irish Pub 6705 N. Northwest Hwy, Chicago, IL 60631
The first pub on the list is The Curraugh Traditional Irish Pub, in Edison Park. As the name implies, this pub prides itself on it’s traditional Irish pub ambiance. The pub features daily drink specials, and has been awarded “the Guinness Gold Standard Award for perfect pints!” In addition to the regular menu this pub also has a comprehensive menu of Irish fare. On Saturdays there is often live music. From the Edison Park Metra Station head southeast on North Olmstead Avenue, left on North Oliphant Avenue, left on Northwest Highway. The pub will be on your right.

From the Curraugh Irish Pub head over to Emerald Isle also in Edison park. This bar features 9 plasma TV’s, daily food and drink specials and live music on Saturdays. Don’t expect to find traditional Irish Food here, the menu is typical bar food. The real draw is the the outdoor patio which draws a crowd in warm weather. To get to Emerald Isle from the Curraugh, head southwest on North Northwest Highway and the bar will be on your right, less than a minute away.

Arlington Heights

Peggy Kinnanes 8 North Vail Avenue Artlington Heights, IL 60005 847-577-7733
Peggy Kinane’s Irish Pub & Restaurant is located several stops down in Arlington Heights. This pub prides itself on it’s true Irish pub authenticity. The pubs interior components were built in Ireland, then shipped and assembled on site. The menu features many Irish favorites and there is often live music. Minutes from the Arlington Heights Metra Station, head northwest on US-14, left on North Vail Avenue.

Palatine

Durty Nellie’s 180 North Smith Street Palatine, IL 60067 847-358-9197
Durty Nellies is just a few stops down the line in Palatine. This pub was modeled after a real Irish pub located in County Clare. Durty Nellies is known for the live music and outdoor beer garden. They have a full menu and a great selection of beer. This 15,000 sq. ft. complex is by far the largest of the bars/restaurants. From the Palatine Metra Station head west on West Wood Street, and left at North Smith Street.

Another Irish Bar in Palatine is T. J. O’Brien’s. This Irish Sport Bar is in the heart of downtown Palatine. The menu features daily drink specials and Irish favorites, such as bangers & mash and Shepperd’s pie prepared from the owners family recipes.

To walk to T.J. O’Briens from Durty Nellies head south on N. Smith St., then left on W. Slade Street. T.J. O’Brien’s will be on the right and is only 6 minutes away. Then hop on a train and head to Barrington.

Barrington

McGonigal's

McGonigal’s Pub 105 South Cook Road Barrington, IL 60010 847-277-7400
McGonigal’s Pub in Barrington is housed in a historic bank building this two story space was transformed into a cozy Irish pub with exposed brick walls and tin ceiling. Full menu available with a terrific beer selection. Located less than five minutes from the train station, head northwest on Park Avenue, turn left on South Cook.

Please note for all multiple stop outings:

If you are making a stop-over on a week day, inform the conductor when you hand them your ticket and they will make a notation to that effect when they punch your ticket. On the weekend this is unnecessary if you are riding on a weekend pass, as it is good for as much Saturday and Sunday travel as you can fit in.

——————————————————————————–

Going on a bar crawl can be a great way to sample the offerings of different restaurants. This more subdued crawl can easily become a small plate progressive dinner as well. Enjoy the lovely downtown Arlington Heights, as it has a lot to offer, with great restaurants, shopping and entertainment.

This bar crawl features three Arlington Heights restaurants, and is more subdued then your traditional crawl. You may want to order some small plate items at each stop and turn this into a progressive dinner.

Francesca's Tavola, 208 South Arlington Heights Road, Arlington Heights IL 60005 847-394-3950

The first stop on the crawl is the Francesca’s Tavola. This is one of “The Family of Francesca Restaurants”, and is a bit of a walk, but worth it. The menu is ever changing and features many seasonal items, your group may want to order some starters to share. The bar is spacious and there is a nice wine list.

To get to Francesca’s from the Metra Station head southeast on US-14 E, and turn right on South Arlington Heights Road. It is about a 9 minute walk.

Red Moon Martini Lounge, 70 South Arlington Heights, IL 60005 847-670-4870

The next stop on our list is the Red Moon Martini Lounge. As the name suggests they serve traditional as well as unique martinis, many with intriguing names such as the “Moonwalker” or the “Kryptonite” Martini. A full bar is available if martinis aren’t your thing. Asian inspired small plate items are also available. Expect eclectic decor, this is more of a lounge atmosphere with sofas as opposed to tables and chairs.

To get to the Red Moon Martini Lounge from Francesca’s head north on South Arlington Heights Road. Although the address is Arlington Heights Road this lounge is tucked away between Davis St. and Sigwalt St. This is only about a 3 minute walk.

Big Shot Piano Lounge & Restaurant, 2 South Vail Avenue, Arlington Heights, IL 60005 847-870-6890

The Big Shot Piano Lounge & Restaurant is the last stop on this bar crawl. Entertainment is available during the week as well as the weekend. Enjoy the piano music with a flight of wine, cocktail or beer. There are a number of small plate items also available.

To get to the Big Shot Piano Lounge & Restaurant, head south on South Arlington Heights Road, right on East Sigwalt Street and right on South Vail Avenue. This is about a 6 minute walk .

To get back to the Metra Station from the Big Shot Piano Lounge, head North on Vail Avenue.

Woodstock Opera House

Palatine is located approximately half way from the city and the furthest stop on the Northwest Pacific Metra Train Line, making it a great place to meet for a bar crawl. Geography aside there is also an abundance of bars which contributes to Palatine being a ideal location. This bar crawl features three great bars.

Pop's Bar and Grill, 19 N. Bothwell St., Palatine, IL. 60067 847-202-9069

We suggest you start the evening at Pop’s (Pete’s of Palatine). Located only minutes from the train station. Pop’s has a great selection of craft, domestic, imported and seasonal beers. There is never a cover charge and if you want to grab a bite to eat before setting out for the next bar Pop’s is known for their wings and homemade pizza some of which are unique to Pop’s such as the Pot Roast Pizza or the Pulled Pork Pizza with Giardiniera. Check the menu because there are always daily food and drink specials.

From the Palatine Metra Station head east on W. Wood St., turn right on N. Brockway St., left on W. Slade St. and N. on Bothwell St. The walk should only take about 4 minutes.

TJ O’Brien’s Bar and Grill is just down the street from Pop’s. This Irish

Sports bar also features daily drink specials as well as some great food, including some Irish favorites. If anyone in your group is up to it, there is an Italian Beef Challenge if you can eat a three foot Italian Beef Sandwich in under 30 minutes you will not only get the sandwich free but forever be immortalized on the wall with your name and picture. You can also enjoy a game of pool at the only pool table in downtown Palatine.

To get to TJ O’Brien’s form Pop’s head north on N. Bothwell St. and continue on W. Slade. T.J. O’Briens is only about a minute away.

The last stop on the crawlis Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grill. Everyone that has ridden the train has probally seen the Lamplighter as it’s outdoor, upper deck overlooks the Metra Tracks. Once again they offer daily food and drink specials. Depending on the night of the week the Lamplighter often has live music, karaoke, open mic, and open jam.
Ortmann’s Red Iron Tavern is new to Woodstock but resides in a 1906, historic red brick building. The tavern is in an ideal location just steps away from the Woodstock Square and the Metra Train Station. The owners Mike and Tammy Ortmann have worked hard on refurbishing the bar and can’t wait to welcome you to their tavern.

On January 1st we had a chance to talk with the husband and wife team Mike and Tammy Ortmann about their new business.

When did you open the tavern?

We officially opened on June 24th, 2011.

Why did you choose Woodstock as the location for your bar?

The people in Woodstock are great. We have lived in Woodstock for over 40 years and raised our family here. We owned the building for several years and the timing was right for us to open our own place. There has been a bar on this site for most of it’s history.

There are a lot of bars and restaurants in Woodstock already, what sets you apart?

We are happy to be a part of a nice group of hometown bars on or near the square. Being located near the other establishments and being so close to the train station makes us an ideal stop for community members, commuters or visitors to Woodstock. We really want to provide our customers a great place to gather with their friends for some fun and socialization. We have a pool table, pinball machine, darts and 3 large screen T.V.’s. We also have free WiFi.

Red Iron Bar

What can people expect when they visit Ortmann’s Red Iron Tavern?

They will find a terrific hometown tavern that is a fun place to be and where you can feel comfortable coming on your own or with a group of friends and always count on a friendly face to greet you. The interior features a horseshoe shaped oak bar with an exposed tin ceiling.

You just renovated your kitchen, do you serve food?

Yes, we have a limited menu which we we hope to expand in the future. Right now we are serving our pulled pork sandwiches and pizza.

How did you come up with the name for the tavern?

The name comes from the unique architectural iron work on the front of the building.

Signature Drink

Do you have any Daily Drink Specials?

Yes, we have $1.50 domestic pints on Friday and $2.00 domestic bottles on Saturday. We have eight beers on tap and one of our signature drinks is the ‘Apple Pie Shot’. We also feature Rum Chata drinks, McSorley’s from New York, great Bloody Marys, and delicious frozen shots as well.

What else would you like People to know about Ortmann’s Red Iron Tavern?

We support the community and hold a number of events at the tavern that benefit various community organizations.
