The Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grille

Any one riding the Northwest Pacific Metra Line through Palatine has probably seen the beer garden on the upper deck of The Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grille. Perhaps like us you were intrigued to find out more about this Palatine landmark. What we found housed in this historic building is a Bar/Restaurant/Venue that has something for everyone.

We interviewed Lisa Bellanca of The Lamplighter Inn Tavern and Grille about the restaurant she owns along with her husband Frank.

How would you describe your business?

In addition to being a bar and a restaurant with a full menu we have a party room where we host Karaoke, D.J.’s, Live Bands, Open Blues Jam an Open Mic Nights as well as other events all at affordable prices. This room is  available to rent for private events as well.  The Lamplighter even has a Wii Bowling night. really try to offer something for everyone.

I noticed the historic plaque on the outside of the building , what can you tell me about the history of the Lamplighter?

The original building dates back to the late 1850′s. It housed a variety of businesses over the years, at one time it served as a Masonic  Temple and a barbershop as well as a bar. In 1975 my husband and his brother purchased the bar. They were going to named the bar Joe and Franks, but later decided to name the bar “Lamplighter Inn” because of the gas lamp lights that use to be in front of the building. Six years ago we expanded the bar to include the restaurant, banquet room, carryout services and beer garden.

You have a lot of  great old photos, where did you get them all?

I  collected the photos over the years, many of which are copies of antique postcards that were printed in limited quantities and quite rare. I am always on the lookout for additional photos. Anyone interested in history will enjoy checking them out.

I see you have a separate carryout section.

Yes, everything on our regular menu is available for carryout. We start serving our full menu at 8:00 am which includes our breakfast sandwiches and wraps. Commuters especially love to be able to grab something and go, or pick up dinner on the way home.

What is your favorite item on the menu?

I like it all. We are really picky about what we put on the menu. If we don’t love it, we won’t serve it. We try to have something for everyone, from sandwiches, salads, wraps and pizza to plated dinners. We have daily specials such as our fish fry on Fridays. We are in the process of expanding our daily specials menu, also look for our new menu coming this spring.

I noticed you even have a menu for children.

We serve a lot of families in our dining room. In the summer the kids enjoy sitting on the outdoor patio and watching the trains go by. Sunday kids under 10 eat free in our dining room.

Because you are so close to the train, do you get a lot of pub crawls?

We do, and if the pub crawl organizer calls ahead we have pizza available for the group.

You have a great website, tell us what inspired the section devoted to people who have met at  Lamplighters and later married.

I met my husband Frank here over 30 years ago, and we thought it would be fun to dedicate a page on our website to other couples who also met and later married, after meeting at Lamplighters. We titled it ‘Love @’Lamps’.

Is there anything else you would like people to know about Lamplighters?

I want people to know that when they come they will be treated like family. We are really proud of our staff and the service they provide. I would also like people to know about our banquet/party room. We host everything from Wii-bowling birthday parties for children and corporate events, to seasonal  beer and food pairings. There is always something fun going on at Lamplighters.
