Raue Center For The Arts has a number of performances that are tailored for families. This beautifully renovated theater is housed in the historic El Tovar building in downtown Crystal Lake. Live entertainment can be a magical experience for a young child, and this can be a terrific way to introduce your child all the theater has to offer. All of the performances geared toward children have early start times, so we suggest taking an early train into Crystal Lake and having breakfast before the show and a sweet treat after. To get to the theater from the downtown Crystal Lake Metra Station, head southwest on Williams Street, and about 1 1/2 blocks down you will see the theater on the right.
Before the show plan to eat breakfast at Benedict’s La Strata. This breakfast and lunch restaurant is family friendly with a “Just for Kids” menu that also features a number of gluten free items. Every child leaves with a decorated “sunny side up” cookie. Benedict’s is located a few doors northeast of the theater on the same side of the street.
After the show stop in at Sweet Pea Cakes. This whimsical cupcake shop is right around the corner from the theater. In addition to regular gourmet cupcakes, they offer a number of specialty cupcakes including, gluten free options. The only drawback is the lack of seating, so you may want to order cupcakes to go and have a treat for the train. To get to Sweet Pea Cakes from the Raue, head northeast on North Williams Street and turn left in the Brinks Street Market. Sweet Pea Cakes will be on you right. The restaurant, theater and bakery are in close proximity to one another and only a five – ten minute walk from the station.
