If you would like to check out a great bike shop when you get off the train in Crystal Lake, head east and the first street you will see is North Main Street. Look left and you will see Wheel Werks it is located on the east side of North Main. At Wheel Werks, their expert staff can assist you with selecting a new bike fit to your body and level of fitness. Wheel Werks offers custom, semi- custom, specialty, and flat tire bikes. If you already own a bike, they can perform a tune up or a complete overhaul. Remember to check with Metra prior to your excursion before bringing your bike on board.
Then head off to the Prairie Trail Bike Path to go for a ride. To connect wiht the bike path going south, proceed south on Main Street after leaving Wheel Werks. Ride two blocks and you will connect with the trail at the corner of Main and Crystal Lake Avenue.
In Algonquin the trail connects to the Fox River Bicycle Trail.which will take you to Aurora, IL. If you started your trip at Ogilvie station, a nice round trip would be Crystal Lake to Geneva and returning to Chicago on the Metra Union Pacific West line.
Should you decide to go north on the trail, take a right when leaving the store on North Main. Go up a couple blocks and turn right on East Prairie. Continue up East Prairie to Glen Ave. and take a left. Glen Avenue leads to to Route 176. Take a right, and almost immediately on your left hand side you will see Lorraine Drive. Continue north on Lorraine for a couple of blocks and you will see the trail on your left hand side. The northern leg of the path goes to Genoa Wisc. Either way you will enjoy a scenic ride.
