This is a great excursion for all the quilters out there weather you are shopping for fabric or ideas. Plan to start your day in Woodstock, and wear those comfy shoes. The first store Woodstock Quilts is less than a ten minute walk from the station, and will take you around the historic Woodstock Square. From the station go west on West Church Street, left on Main Street, left at Cass Street then right at South Benton Street. At this point you may want to stop for coffee and a treat at Swiss Maid Bakery. This is a great bakery, and you can justify it by all the walking you are going to do today. If the weather is nice you may want to sit in the Woodstock Square Park across the street. After your break, continue down South Benton and turn left on East Jackson Street, then right on South Seminary Road. There tucked away you will see Woodstock Quilts.
Hopscotch Square Quilt Shop is your next stop. Head back to the square by going north on South Seminary Road, left on East Calhoun Street, then right on Dean Street, left on West Van Buren Street and finally right on Johnson Street. Sounds like a lot of twists and turns, but should only take about 6 minutes.
Before heading back to the train, Jenapea’s is an outstanding spot for lunch. They are known for their sandwiches, soup and freshly brewed ice tea. Again you may want to get your food to go, and sit in the park across the street. Jenapea’s is located on Woodstock square, turn right when leaving the Hopscotch Square Quilt store, then left on East Van Buren Street, and after crossing Dean Street you will see Jenapea’s on you right. After lunch head back to the station for your next stop in Fox River Grove .
This next store is not strictly a quilt store, however they carry a wonderful selection of quilting fabric, including solids and batiks. Material Girl is blocks from the train in the heart of Crystal Lake. This adorable store has recently been renovated and friendly staff will be happy to assist you in making selections. Material Girl will soon be adding quilting classes. To get to Material girl head southwest on Grant Street, left on Brink Street, right on Williams Street.
Peaceful Gathering Quilt Shop is just a short walk from the Fox River Grove Metra Station. Head northwest out of the lot and turn right on Lincoln Ave., then left on US-14/ Northwest Highway. The quilt shop is located on your right. After shopping, head back to the train for your final destination.
Please don’t cut your excursion short and miss this final stop. Located in Barrington A Touch of Amish Quilt Shoppe is one of the premier quilt stores in Illinois. In addition to all the fabric and notions, they host events, retreats and classes. To get to this store head northwest on Park Avenue, turn left at County Line Road/East Main Street, right at North Hough Street and finally left on Applebee Street. Hopefully you will be inspired by these beautiful shops to rev up your sewing machine once you get home.
Please note for all multiple stop outings
If you are making a stop-over on a week day, inform the conductor when you hand them your ticket and they will make a notation to that effect when they punch your ticket. On the weekend this is unnecessary if you are riding on a weekend pass, as it is good for as much Saturday and Sunday travel as you can fit in.
