Downtown Crystal Lake / Main Street was initially founded by local community volunteers in 1996 and
organized as a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Currently, there are 52 Main Street communities in Illinois. Downtown Crystal Lake has been designated as one of only five “Premier” Communities, which represents the top level of Main Street designation in the State of Illinois. Additionally, Downtown Crystal Lake has also received designation at the national level as a National Main Street Community. Only a small percentage of Illinois Main Street programs have earned this national designation. Main Street is a preservation-based economic development program geared specifically to historic downtown business districts.
Interview with Diana Kenney, the Executive Director:
We had the opportunity to interview Diana Kenney the Executive Director for Downtown Crystal Lake / Main Street and asked her to share the role the organization plays in the community. Diana is a familiar face around town and has been the executive director since 2000.
Our organization is dedicated to preserving and revitalizing Crystal Lake’s historic downtown district. Our program operates under the Four-point Main Street approach which is a proven formula for downtown economic development and revitalization.
Briefly, the Four-point approach encompasses:
- Building an effective volunteer-driven organization, with broad-based public and private sector support
- Enhancing the design and appearance of downtown through historic preservation
- Creating image and promotion strategies that bring people downtown
- Developing appropriate economic restructuring strategies to sustain the economic vitality of downtown
A fifth component used by Downtown Crystal Lake includes:
- Establishing a comprehensive marketing campaign to attract visitors from outside the local market to Downtown Crystal Lake
