Material Girl

Material Girl is a fabric store and sewing studio located in the heart of historic downtown Crystal Lake.

Susie Fox

New owner Susie Fox recently purchased and renovated The Fabric Store in 2010, renaming it Material Girl. Susie is thrilled to have the opportunity to continue the legacy that Millie Gieseke, the previous owner of the The Fabric Shop has built, and put a fresh, modern spin on it.

The Material Girl Shop is a great example of blending new, state of the art with old world charm.

Owner Interview:

We interviewed Susie Fox,  of Material Girl in Crystal Lake about what is like being the new owner of one the few independently owned fabric stores in the country:

Open yet, Cozy and Comfortable

How would you describe your store?

We are a hometown, home-grown, fully-stocked fabric store. We will continue to offer the extensive variety of fabrics, trims and notions that The Fabric Store has been known for , for 50+ years. In addition, we have added more fabric lines and designers, as well as sewing classes and services. These classes are  for beginners as well as experienced sewers of all ages looking for new ideas and inspirations. We hope to add parties and alteration services in the future. I want Material Girl to be a fun store to shop in and inspire sewing projects for your home, yourself or as a gift. The next generation seems to be very hands on and creative. I think that is awesome.

Great Selection of In-Style Fabrics

What inspired you to open a fabric store and sewing studio? I took my first sewing class at the age of 12 at Singer Sewing in the Lindale Mall (Cedar Rapids, Iowa)at 8:30 am -during the summer!! My sister and I were not thrilled with our mother that summer, but these days we thank our lucky stars that she wanted us to learn a skill and take interest at an early age in a life long hobby!

Do you offer any other services or classes?

We have a Sewing Club on Thursday nights, where you can just come in to work on your own projects and a member of our staff can assist you in technique or pattern reading or any thing else you may need help with. You can even use our sewing machines.  There is no cost for the club. We also have fun projects such as making pajama pants, bags, Quilting samplers and for the holidays we made advent calenders. Please check our website for class schedules and to sign up for classes.
